Dedicated to commemorate 1000 years of Lithuania, Ženklas (The Sign) by the sculptor Gintaras Karosas is one of the large-scale pieces of work from this author. The sculptural arrangement looks like a checkmark that we use to mark some object on a piece of paper. A thousand years ago, Lithuania’s name was mentioned in a written source for the first time, and the artist wanted to create a tangible sign for the next millennium, one that would tell the story of the lonely word that marked the origin of a country. It is a symbol of strength and longevity.
The enormous monumental steel pillar stands out in its colour of rust amidst the forest, and its vantage point in the middle of a knoll commands the viewer to look up.
